magic realism

i've decided that if i were ever to study some very specific topic thoroughly, it would be the genre of "magic realism" in art and literature. i've recently been fascinated novels which are characterized as magic realism. i am finding it impossible to read anything else. i read only isabel allende and gabriel garcia marquez, voraciously and addictedly. i like that when i read them, my dreams are fantastical and my imagination is hyper-sensitive and my senses are ultra-aware.

a play opens in new york tomorrow based on allende's novel "the house of the spirits," which i think (and many others think) is her best. it is entirely in spanish, but english translation is available. the playwright translated from the english version of the novel to write the play, which is interesting because allende originally published the novel in spanish. so if i were to spontaneously fly to new york to see the play between tomorrow and when it closes in june, i would be hearing a translation of the spanish, translated from the english translated from the original spanish. weird.

although my internet access is limited, i hope to look up artists who painted in the style of magic realism soon.
