death by alcoholism
my computer died of alcohol poisoning last night. one should never drown their sorrows or their laptop in cabernet. he looked as though he lay dying in a pool of blood; really, it was just red wine, but the effects were the same: i am computer-less for who knows how long.
i dug out my old desktop this morning and discovered that i had really terrible taste in music a year and a half ago, which is when i last used that old guy on a regular basis. i'm trying not to think about having lost my entire music collection, which, ridiculously, i don't have backed up.
i'm going to take my poor drowned laptop to a repairman tomorrow, but so far i've had no luck reviving it, and i am afraid to hope. i don't think i can survive without a computer so i will probably deplete my savings and/or use credit to buy a new one. on the upside, the new macbooks have aluminum casing, which i always thought looked cool.
i'm trying to look on the bright side. last night i absolutely. lost. it. and i'm pretty much a stone's throw from doing so again at any moment.

dont worry, its easy to pull the hard drive and recover your data.
the motherboard is probably toast though (not cheap).
We had luck drying out a cell phone that had been through the washer by leaving it near an incandescent light bulb that was on. The heat from the bulb was enough to dry the phone over the course of a couple of days. In your shoes, I would leave the laptop open in a warm and dry place and not try to turn it on for a couple of days.
i cried for hours back and forth when i lost all my music on accident. I definitely feel your pain for music. and whether or not your computer will survive honestly depends on how much of your computer got wet and where it's affected.
one time, my heart got stuffed with alcohol and i didn't think it would ever recover. but i left it in the sunshine of love for days and days and, wouldn't you know it, it ticks along just fine now.
Kates m'dear, I lament along with you. But Anonymous is right: even if the logic board is in hopeless disrepair your files are probably still fully recoverable. And if it turns out that after some sun-drying the beast magically revives with the only problem being sticky keys, I happen to have an extra MacBook keyboard which I would be happy to pass on to you (as long as you don't mind it being white). I don't suppose you put all your music on your iPod, but if you did then you might reclaim it rather more quickly. In any case, all will be well.
